Ubuntu 9.10. Brilliant!

Ubuntu 9.10 – The new release from Canonical
I’ve been playing with the beta and now the full release of Ubuntu is out I’ve decided to do a little writeup on the Linux based operating system.
Behold, the Ubuntu desktop!
What can it do?
Ubuntu is a full desktop operating system complete with useful applications such as:
OpenOffice, a Microsoft Office (and more open standards compliant too) compatible office suite which enables you to create, edit, save and print documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
Above: OpenOffice Writer
The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), a program similar to Photoshop which enables you to create layered artwork.

For your internet needs Ubuntu comes with both Firefox and Evolution Mail.
 Firefox on the Ubuntu homepage.
Aside from those 3 essential (at least to me) applications there are far more applications available by default and even more can be downloaded (all for free) via the new Ubuntu Software Center.

Advantages over Windows?
Running Ubuntu (or any Linux OS)  has some hefty advantages over Windows. The biggest being that the OS and most software is free and the extra security Linux brings as it is virtually impossible for a Linux based OS to become infected by malware, spyware of viruses.

Another advantage is the speed of the OS. On the machine I’m using (Intel Pentium M 1.1GHz, 768MB RAM, 40GB HDD) Windows XP can slowdown with antivirus and anti spyware software sucking at its resources but in Ubuntu there is no need to worry about such software! The OS as a whole runs far better than Windows XP with faster boot times and applications loading faster on the same machine running Windows.

Any disadvantages?
Getting used to a new OS can be daunting for some and people that are used to using Windows only and they may miss some software they use on their Windows PC’s.

Overall
My experience with Ubuntu 9.10 over 9.04 so far is great. The subtle new looks of the OS are an improvement, things like the new software center I can see being very friendly for new users and performance just as good as it was with the last release.

Ubuntu 9.10 is a very user friendly Linux OS well worth a try for someone who wants someone interested in something new, different open and free!

VMWare Fusion 3 for mac. Good stuff!

by Chaz on Oct.27, 2009, under Apple, Software

This is a little review of VMWare Fusion 3 for mac.

Setting up a VM:
Creating a virtual machine is simple. If you have an OS CD in your macs drive it’ll detect it and will guide you through creating a virtual machine for that specific OS or you can chose an ISO image and install from that (this is slightly faster)
