Android App: Wardrive.

by Chaz on Nov.26, 2009, under Android, Software

Wardrive is an application which uses Google maps, GPS and the WiFi signal on an Android based phone to take note of wireless access points which are left unsecured.

A sample map from the Wardrive Database

You can export maps you’ve recorded to a kml file and view them on Google Earth and you can also upload your findings to the Wardrive Database .

Overall, it surprised me the amount of homes which had their wireless unsecured!
It’s an interesting application but the ethics of it could be questioned.

A great app nontheless available on the Android Marketplace for free.

Youtube Vid: Lock 2.0 for Android. (iPhone style lock screen)

by Chaz on Nov.26, 2009, under Android, Software

Anyone in love with the iPhone lock screen should give Lock 2.0 a go. It’s a lockscreen for Android which simulates the “slide to unlock” screen of the iPhone.

Lock 2.0  in action.

Overall the app is nice and works well with my HTC Hero. The only problem I have is that the music controls are nto compatible with the music player on the Hero but that isn’t too much of a problem for me.

There is both a free limited version on the Android Marketplace and another paid for version with more features.

Chrome OS.

by Chaz on Nov.20, 2009, under Software

I’ve just been playing with Chrome OS in a virtual machine. It’s very slow in a VM (but thats to be expected seeing as it is in such an early stage) and there is not a lot going on at the moment.

Compared to Android at this stage it isn’t as good personally and both Chrome OS and Android could end up competing in the netbook market.

I’ve tested both LiveAndroid and Chrome OS in VMWare and have some screenshots from a couple of websites to compare.

All of the info to use Chrome OS is here: TechCrunch guide to using Chrome OS in VirtualBox

Free GPS for owners of the HTC Hero on Orange UK.

by Chaz on Nov.01, 2009, under Android, Software

Orange maps is now available to owners of the HTC Hero on Orange UK:
From Tomb on Hot UK Deals:
“Orange Maps are now available for the HTC Hero (They were previously unavailable for the Android OS.)
Orange dont seem to be letting anyone know that this is the case & it isnt listed as a supported phone on the Orange website yet but it is indeed available & working happily on my Hero.
I know that Orange Maps aint a patch on a standalone Sat-Nav but given that you probably dont carry your Sat-Nav in your pocket everywhere you go…… (or do you).
I believe Orange Maps are “free/included” as part of any Orange package which originally cost £30 or over (even if you got a deal where its a bit cheaper).
If you have an Orange package which does include Orange Maps may be worth a download.”
I posted instructions on what to do in the thread on the link above How to install
To install these, disable Wifi and connect via GRPS/HSDPA
Go to http://orangeworld.co.uk on your Hero
Scroll down on the page until you see the “Download Orange Maps – free in your plan” and tap on it
On the next page select on “Download Orange Maps” to download.
Once downloaded, tap to install and whilst installing it will ask about installing non marketplace apps, tick the “Unknown sources” box then the back arrow to install!
EDIT It kept force closing for me on the initial launch if the phone went into standby. I stopped the screen from fading by tapping it and that seemed to solve it for me. Once it was set up it was all goood!
So to anyone who uses these instructions, please don’t forget to register with hotukdeals and give Tomb some heat and rep for letting us know about this deal!
