NPD: Android outsells iPhone in the last quarter in the United States.

by Chaz on May.10, 2010, under Android, Smartphones, Software

It seems that for the first time, smartphones running on Google’s Android OS have outsold the iPhone for the first time in the U.S.

Google’s Android-based smartphones accounted for 28% of smartphone sales, while the iPhone accounted for 21%, according to market research firm NPD.

I can think of MANY reasons for this. The iPhone is only on one US carrier (AT&T) and is at the end of its product life so sales would be naturally down (in my eyes) as more people will be waiting for the next generation iPhone.

It’s still quite an achievement for Google and the Open Handset Alliance but I suspect things would have changed back to the iPhone at number 2 once the next gen iPhone is released! :D

iSyncr for Android Media Sync – Mac OSX Version.

by Chaz on May.01, 2010, under Android, Software

I’ve been looking for a decent solution to sync my music onto my Nexus One from my Mac and was using DoubleTwist to do so. DoubleTwist works fine but I thought I’d see what else is out there and found iSyncr for Mac OS X on the Android Market.

iSyncr for Mac OSX

Once installed, you run iSyncr and it puts a Mac OSX compatible app on the root of your SD card. Next, you mount the SD card and run the app from the SD card on your Mac and it presents you with the following screen:

Choose which playlists to sync.

This screen lists all your playlists and lets you choose which playlist to sync with your Android phone. I chose my Nexus One playlist and proceeded to sync my playlist. (continue reading…)

Microsoft seeking licencing agreements from Android handset manufacturers.

by Chaz on Apr.28, 2010, under Android, Smartphones, Software

Yesterday it was announced that HTC and Microsoft had struck a deal to licence patents concerning Google’s Android operating system. Some saw this as HTC backing down to Microsoft and others saw it as Microsoft siding with HTC in its recent patent dispute with Apple.

It seems that it may not be the case of Microsoft siding with HTC as Microsoft’s Horacio Gutierrez has issued the following statement:

Microsoft has a decades-long record of investment in software platforms. As a result, we have built a significant patent portfolio in this field, and we have a responsibility to our customers, partners, and shareholders to ensure that competitors do not free ride on our innovations. We have also consistently taken a proactive approach to licensing to resolve IP infringement by other companies, and have been talking with several device manufacturers to address our concerns relative to the Android mobile platform.

It’s currently unknown which manufacturers Microsoft have been talking to. It’ll be interesting to see if Google have anything to say about any future disputes.

Engadget have a very interesting scoop. They have acquired some supposed shots and what seems to be hands on time with the potential next Gen iPhone.

The worst thing is that the device doesn’t power on so there is a chance that this isn’t the real thing but in my opinion if it is real. it does look similar to the HTC HD2 or the Evolution.

iPad worldwide launch dealyed, over 500,000 sold so far!

by Chaz on Apr.14, 2010, under Apple

Apple have had to postpone the iPad’s worldwide launch due to high demand.

Apple iPad

Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad™. We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.

The iPad will now launch worldwide at the end of May with preorders starting on Monday May 10th. iPad fans are sadly going to have to wait a few more weeks unless happy eBay scalpers get your cash. ;)

Opera Mini for iPhone approved!

by Chaz on Apr.13, 2010, under Apple, Smartphones, Software

Opera’s bandwith saving browser has been approved by Apple and is now availabe for download.

The browser connects to Opera’s servers which compresses websites server side and the compressed site is sent to the phone.

This can result in vastly improved browsing speeds when browsing using a slower GPRS or Edge connection and even helps full on 3g connections!

Available now in the Apple app store.

bTunes music player for Android. Just like iPhone or iPod touch in your Android!

by Chaz on Apr.12, 2010, under Android, Smartphones, Software

I saw this app mentioned in the comments of an article recently and the comment sparked my interest when it said that bTunes was just like the iPod app from the iPod touch and iPhone.
In the video below you can see the similarities between the two.

Its pretty good but is missing things like coverflow. One useful enhancement it has is the ability to go to the next or previous track by simply swiping on the album art left or right or double tapping on the album art to pause and resume playback.

It also features a homescreen widget and lockscreen controls so you have plenty of ways to control playback. A good app overall and it is available on the android market. :)

Original iPhone and iPod touch neglected an OS 4.0 update.

by Chaz on Apr.08, 2010, under Apple, Smartphones, Software

It seems that the original iPhone and iPod touch’s time for iPhone OS updates is over.  According to an iPhone preview OS page, both of the first gen devices are excluded from updates.

iPhone OS 4 Compatibility

iPhone OS 4 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second- and third-generation iPod touch this summer, and with iPad in the fall. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).

If this leaves first gen owners on iPhone OS 3.1 is unknown but it seems the pioneers of iPhone OS will be stuck without updates. :(
