Does the Dell Streak suffer a 30FPS limit like the Evo? (Archos 5, Nexus One and Dell Streak benchmarks) [Video]

by Chaz on Jun.28, 2010, under Android, Smartphones

A friend of mine asked me to run a few benchmarks of my Evo to compare so I made this little video and discovered a similar issue that the Evo may have faced:

As you can see from the Video, in the FPS2D benchmark and the An3DBench benchmarks the Dell Streak doesn’t go over 30FPS at all.

Dell Streak:

  • FPS2D result: 29 fps average
  • An3DBench – Multiple Lights: 29.22 fps
  • An3DBench – Keyframe Animation: 29.20 fps

Archos 5 Internet Tablet

  • FPS2D result: 49 fps average
  • An3DBench – Multiple Lights: 43.97 fps
  • An3DBench – Keyframe Animation: 49.83 fps

Nexus One:

  • FPS2D result: 60 fps average
  • An3DBench – Multiple Lights: 53.59 fps
  • An3DBench – Keyframe Animation: 60.38 fps

I’m not sure if it is a 30FPS limit on the streak but from what I’ve seen here, it may be the case.

iPhone 4 signal issues. You’re holding it wrong and it’s ok, it happens to other handsets too! [Video]

by Chaz on Jun.25, 2010, under Android, Apple, Smartphones

It seems that there is a little damage control over the recent iPhone 4 signal issue revelation when the phone is held (quite normally) in the left hand.

According to Engadget, Steve Jobs has responded to the issue citing that people are to “Just avoid holding it the wrong way” and another post by MacRumors also cites that there are “Other Mobile Phones With Similar Signal Loss Issues

I decided to put this theory to the test as I’ve seen countless comments saying that the iPhone 3G or 3GS has the issue as well as the Nexus One (neither of which I have experienced during the 12 months of iPhone 3g ownership nor on my Nexus One).

As you can see from my video, my wife’s iPhone 3g performs better in hand and my N1 with it’s GPRS connection has no bandwidth degradation whatsoever.

The silliest thing about this “holding it the wrong way” affair? See for yourself…..

bTunes music player for Android. Just like iPhone or iPod touch in your Android!

by Chaz on Apr.12, 2010, under Android, Smartphones, Software

I saw this app mentioned in the comments of an article recently and the comment sparked my interest when it said that bTunes was just like the iPod app from the iPod touch and iPhone.
In the video below you can see the similarities between the two.

Its pretty good but is missing things like coverflow. One useful enhancement it has is the ability to go to the next or previous track by simply swiping on the album art left or right or double tapping on the album art to pause and resume playback.

It also features a homescreen widget and lockscreen controls so you have plenty of ways to control playback. A good app overall and it is available on the android market. :)

ThickButtons Android Keyboard, for those with fat fingers!

by Chaz on Mar.23, 2010, under Android, Smartphones, Software

Here is an interesting keyboard replacement for Android, it’s called ThickButtons and it dynamically changes expected keypresses to fatter keys.

It’s not a bad keyboard replacement and works quite well but I did feel I was a little slower when typing as I had to adjust to the moving keys as they enlarged.

The app is available on the Anrdoid Market for free. Scan the QR code below or search for “thickbuttons” on the Market.

Cross platform gaming heaven: Single game running on Windows Phone Series 7, Windows and XBOX360!

by Chaz on Mar.06, 2010, under Smartphones, Software

Here is an interesting video. It shows a single game being played on Windows, XBOX360 and Windows Phone series 7!

Microsoft’s Eric Rudder, speaking at TechEd Middle East, showed off a game developed in Visual Studio as a singular project (with 90% shared code) that plays on Windows with a keyboard, a Windows Phone 7 Series prototype device with accelerometer and touch controls, and the Xbox 360 with the Xbox gamepad. Interestingly, not only is the development cross-platform friendly, but the game itself  saves its place and lets you resume from that spot on whichever platform you happen to pick up.

That last bit sounds very interesting! Being able to continue a game nomatter where you are would be a very nice feature.

First glimpse Symbian^4 demo videos

by Chaz on Feb.27, 2010, under Smartphones, Software

There have been 2 “first glimpse” videos released featuring Symbian^4′s UI:

Homescreen UI:

Gallery UI:

The new UI looks very finger friendly and touch centric but these early videos lack some polish. Hopefully it will look more polished once released and there is no reason to think it won’t as these to seem to be very early previews.
